Locked Out Of Your PC?
Posted by: | CommentsI had a memorable experience yesterday. A friend was locked out of their PC. Sounds implausible at first, but she generally uses a MAC and had not used this PC computer in a while…Hence, She forgot the password.
The problem! How do you get into the computer to change the password when you have to get into the computer to change the password…you see the problem!
You can guess my initial reaction, but I Goggled this problem. WOW, the number of searches for this issue was astonishing. This must happen to 100’s of people every day.
I found a number of paid solutions. Many of them required access the Administrators password. Now, if we could have gotten to the Administrator’s level, couldn’t we just fix the problem without assistance? I still haven’t figured that one out.
Eventually, I found Ophcrack and we were able to recover the Password for free.
I took this lesson to heart and downloaded a copy onto a CD for myself and put it in a safe place should I ever need it. I suggest you do the same.
Choosing A Hosting Company
Posted by: | Comments
Hosting Companies are like diets. Ask 10 people and you will get 10 different recommendations, leaving you back where you were…or even further confused.
The reason is simple. We are not all looking for the same services. So let’s figure out a few things that will move you in the right direction toward finding a company that will work for YOU.
As always, Google is your friend, so be sure to do your own research.
Here are a few pointers:
- There are way too many reliable “Brand Name” Companies to try an unproven newcomer to the market when you are a beginner yourself. So save your testing for a later date.
-
SO, WHAT QUESTIONS Should you ask? Here are a few suggestions to start with:
- What is their Initial Annual Fee per URL? What is the cost of Renewals?
- What type of Customer Service do they offer? Online Only…Live…What are their Hours?
- Can they Handle Your E-mail Needs? At what cost?
- Do they Provide Hosting and Backup? Is it the service you need?
- Do they have standard Plug-Ins Included? For Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal or whatever software you plan to use.
- What type of Control Panel? Standard or C-Panel?
- Do they support PHP and MySQL Databases?
These questions will get you started, but be sure to make your own list of needs that you are concerned about. Write or call and ask your questions. If they don’t answer right away. Well, that tells you the answer to the 2nd question. Go to the next company on your list.
Blogger vs. Wordpress
Posted by: | Comments
This is a great subject for me since I have 14 Blogger sites. Franky Blogger has added some great new tools and is, without a doubt, much easier to use. And, I must say that Google has done a great job improving the process.
So, why switch to Wordpress? I must 1st mention that I am not talking about Wordpress.com (the free version). If that is what you are considering, I would stay where you are. Wordpress.org ( the self-hosted version) has many features, plug-ins, cooll templates, etc. that I just couldn’t resist.
The primary motivation, initially, was to own my domain without redirecting it to a .blogspot URL. While the Google algorithms are an enigma at best, it is clear to me that redirecting or forwarding a URL does not help your position in the search engines.
So, Wordpress, here I come. I will be sharing great tools, widgets, and plug-ins as I discover more of the OVER 2,000 options.
